Our Story

In 2012 at a medical conference, we had a “lightbulb moment” after listening to a case presentation of a young patient who needed ankle fusion surgery.  A new approach was envisioned.

The traditional ankle fusion surgery as first performed by Dr. Edward Albert in 1879 required invasive tissue stripping and screws to hold the tibiotalar joint together as the two bones fused. The patient must rest and be off their feet for 6 to 8 weeks before they can walk on the operated foot.

Our team embarked on a long journey of working with biomechanical engineers and other thought-leaders in the field to come up with a solution that is available for patients today. This solution provides patients with faster healing, earlier return to function, and improved quality of life. As a company, Shotel Medical is happy to provide the Shotel™ Arthrodesis Nail system to patients who require ankle surgery due to end-stage ankle arthritis.
